Applemore College
Applemore College is a small secondary school on the Waterside with approximately 600 students.
The canteeen suffered from a lack of dining space, causing an overspill at lunchtime into the corridor and even into classrooms. The unappealing surroundings also put students off, with few choosing to eat in the canteen at all.

Blake Valley Technology College
Blake Valley Technology College is a secondary school in the Cannock area of Staffordshire with around 800 students.
The queuing system and fixed seating arrangements meant that students couldn't enjoy mealtimes without feeling crowded. The dining hall was plain and out-of-date and students generally preferred to buy their meals elsewhere.
Broadmeadow Junior School
Broadmeadow is a larger-than-average junior school in Kings Norton, about 6 miles from Birmingham, with 260 pupils who take up school meals.
The kitchen and servery area were in need of a complete overhaul and there was no dedicated dining space. Queue delays were a problem. Pupils also disliked being separated from their friends at lunchtime.
Cherbourg Primary School
Cherbourg Primary School is situated near the centre of Eastleigh, located between Winchester and Southampton.
There are around 330 pupils ranging from 4-11 years old. The set-up in the dining area was not to the pupils' liking. It had lots of different uses and felt quite plain and cramped.
Churnet View Middle School
Churnet View is a middle school in the Leek area of Staffordshire. There are 489 pupils on roll, of which about 150 take school lunches.
The kitchen was the main problem here, with potential health and safety hazards caused by poor equipment, and the servery was cramped. The quality of the food and portion sizes were not up to standard, with higher food costs than necessary.
Fatfield Primary School
Fatfield Primary School is in the Washington area of Sunderland. There are around 234 pupils on roll.
The school was rebuilt in 1999 so is a modern building, but a kitchen was not provided at the time. Instead the school meals were transported from another site. The school was keen to have its own kitchen and prepare food on site.
Hetton School
Hetton School in Sunderland is a specialist Technology College with around 1000 students ranging from 11 to 16.
Although there was adequate space in the dining hall and the food was good, the area had become quite shabby. The kitchen was desperately in need of new equipment and modernisation.
Paget Primary
Paget Primary is an infant and junior school in the Pype Hayes area of Birmingham.
This is a smaller than average size school, with 206 pupils on roll, of which 120 take up school meals. The dining hall was not a place the children wanted to spend time in, frequently rushing their meals to play outside. The kitchen was poorly organised and lacked space.
St Luke's School
St Luke's School is a voluntary aided church school situated in Portsmouth with around 750 pupils on roll.
Problems with queuing, congestion around the servery area and outdated kitchen equipment meant that everyone was keen to make changes.
