Canteen cash up for grabs!
Fatfield Primary School
Before
Fatfield was previously only a dining centre. Food was brought in hot boxes from another school at about 11am and then kept in hot cupboards until lunchtime began - 11.30 for nursery and slightly later for the rest of the school. They were really keen to have a new kitchen and produce food on site and were willing to do as much as they could to accommodate any works to make this happen.

After
Sunderland County Council worked closely with the school to ensure the best layout for the kitchen, and a production manager was brought in for a few months to run the kitchen and allow the staff to gain experience.
A Free School Meal Trial was run in March to let all the pupils experience the new meals on offer. This proved to be very successful with take up increasing to over 90% during the Free Meal Week and around 64% following it (a 20% increase). A launch involving the parents tasting the food on offer also helped increase take up.
